The current version of "To Be King" is in need of more
than 300 pieces of art before it's non-beta 1.0 release. If you'd
like to help, send us some art. The following is a FAQ's on exactly how
to do that.
What kind of art is needed?
Mostly card art (150 x 150) and a few character races need to be done
(375 x 375). If you have the game, the cards and character races will
have the need for art stamped right on it. They look like this:
Reading the card or race description will give you a
good idea of what the art piece should look like. See something you
like, do some art for it. There is also a full list of what needs to be
done below.
What quality are
you looking for?
I'm not very picky. My main concern is to get the game complete. If
it's a reasonable depiction of what's needed, I'll use it. It must be
in color.
What do I get for
submitting art?
Your art will be featured on the Art Gallery
page with whatever links you wish to include. You will also be listed
in the game credits as a contributor.
So, I'm not going
to get any money, right?
No. This is a free project.
Do I retain the
rights to my art?
Absolutely! You will continue to own your art. It will be considered
"Used by permission" and your name will be stamped on every piece. You
may use it anywhere else you like and you may have it removed from the
game at anytime.
What do I have to
do to submit art?
Just pick a card or character race that suits your fancy, make some art
for it, and send it to me.
That's it.
If I see something
I like, can I reserve it to insure no one else beats me to it?
Only if you're a contributing artist.
How do I get
"contributing artist" status?
Simply send in some art. Over the past year in the development on this
game, I've had several individuals offer to produce art ...many of
which reserved several pieces. Only about 1 in 4 actually produced
anything. Many others simply disappeared and I never heard from them
again. It's unfortunate but that's the reality of life on the Internet.
If you send me something, it shows me that you are serious about doing
artwork for the game and you will then be considered a "contributing
artist". Then you can reserve specific pieces of art.
There's also a section set up in the TBK Forum where
contributing
artists can showcase any of their art and include any links they like.
Any particular
rules for reserving art?
You may reserve 2 game items to do art for and the reservation will be
good for 2 weeks. After that, the item will be made available
to the public. If something comes up that delays you (I know how real
life can get in the way), then let me know and we'll work something
out. My main concern here is people reserving art for a particular item
and then never producing. I really would like to have a complete game
done within a reasonable amount of time and that's not going to happen
if half the art is locked up in reservations by people who aren't going
to finish them.
What graphics
format do you prefer?
Doesn't matter really. I have the tools to convert any graphics
format and your art can be easily fitted into templates that are set up
for creating cards, character race tokens and player sheet
graphics. As mentioned above, card art is 150 x 150 and character
race art is 375 x 375. You can send in graphics that are much larger
than that. Just keep in mind that a lot of detail may be lost when it's
shrunk down to it's final size. As far as character race art, if you
examine the samples above, you'll note that the art for the player
sheet graphic is circular and the race tokens have buttons along 3
sides. So, you may want to keep your art subjects centered as you may
lose details around the edges. Card art has a shield in the upper left
corner which may cover details, as well.
What if the artwork
doesn't match what you had in mind?
Doesn't matter. It's much easier to change the
description of a card or race to match a graphic than vice versa. If
you send in a totally original piece of art that isn't based on a
specific game piece, I can work that in, as well. In other words, be as
imaginative as you like. I'm flexible.
Where's the list of
art that needs to be done?
Here you go: Character Race Art (5 royalty points each)
Cantrain - Male Cantrain - Female
Cantrains are closely related to humans but
with powerful minds making them the most intelligent of all the races.
They find things easily and solve problems quickly making them experts
at living by their wits. Having enough magical knowledge to always know
at least one spell and be able to attack psionically is a bonus, as
well. Cantrains start as Good but they can be converted to Neutral.
You'll never find an Evil one, though. They're much too smart to be
attracted to that level of greed.
Dwarf - Male Dwarf - Female
Short and stocky but amazingly agile and
swift, Dwarves are most comfortable in mountainous areas and are known
for their majestic cavernous cities. They have limited magic abilities
but they are capable of knowing a wide range of special abilities.
Dwarves have been known to follow any alignment and may be converted to
any other alignment.
Elf - Male Elf - Female
Very lean and agile with sharp chiseled
features and pointed ears, Elves are natural foresters and have built
glorious tree settlements. They're not particularly social or strong
but they make up for it in their powerful skills, speed and magic
abilities - which includes always knowing a spell and the ability to
attack psionically. Elves have been known to follow any alignment and
may be converted to any other alignment.
Fairy - Male
Faries are small creatures with limited flying
abilities allowing them to go head to head with other flying creatures
and to travel short distances. They will strongly avoid physical combat
as they are do not possess great power. However, they are very fast and
their amazing psychic knowledge gives them extraordinary magical
abilities, which includes always knowing at least 2 spells, being able
to carry a multitude of arcane items, and launching formidable psionic
attacks. Fairies are always Good and cannot be converted.
Feron - Female
Ferons are a race of hybrid man/cat with a
variety of colors and designs. Generally loners who are socially
indifferent, extremely skillful and stealthy, very good at finding
things, and master thieves giving new meaning to the term "cat
burglar". Ferons start as Neutral but can be converted to any other
alignment.
Halfling - Male Halfling - Female
Appearing as miniature humans, Halflings
aren't very strong but they are incredibly swift and crafty enabling
them to surprise or avoid their enemies with ease, solve problems, and
find things with little trouble. They also have a fair amount of
magical talent. Halflings start as Good but may be converted to any
other alignment.
Hobgoblin - Male Hobgoblin - Female
A savage warrior race that loves battle,
Hobgoblins take great glee in torture and bloodshed, and generally
enjoy bullying their enemies. Although somewhat smarter than Orcs, they
really don't have any strong attributes except their power and
intimidation - which are both pretty intense. Hobgoblins are Evil and
they'll never be anything else.
Human - Male Human - Female
Humans have no special abilities based on
their race but they easily master any special ability they set their
mind to. For this reason, they have a full range of special abilities
available to them. Humans can be fighters or magic users based on
their attributes of which no particular one stands out above the
others. Humans are known to follow any alignment and may become any
other alignment.
Krimin - Female
Quite often passing for human, the Krimin are
actually an extremely spiritual race that worships Gods and have a
natural tendency to rid the world of unnatural beings - especially the
undead, which inspires a savage destructive rage within them. Skillful,
sociable and very psychic, they always know at least one spell and can
attack psionically. Krimin start as Good but can be converted to any
other alignment.
Orc - Female
Don't let the Orc's small size fool you, these
dudes are lean, mean, fighting machines who are very strong and very
fast. They also like to enslave others and have them do their dirty
work. Good thing for them because they lack the intelligence for strong
skills and magic abilities and their not very well liked. Orcs start as
Evil but they can be converted to Neutral. The chance of an Orc
becoming Good, though, is pretty laughable. Ain't gonna happen.
Rilla - Male Rilla - Female
Rillas are closely related to humans, except
shorter and stockier with a larger head. They tend to avoid
confrontation and magic of any kind by exerting their amazing strength
in social abilities allowing them to talk others into just about
anything. They easily attract companions and are well suited as
merchants, bankers and con-men. Rillas start as Neutral but have never
been known to care much about alignment and can be easily converted
...especially if it means making a deal.
Shadwerl - Male Shadwerl - Female
A nearly isolated and very reclusive race,
Shadwerls have become experts at surviving in the wild ...almost to the
point of being wild animals. But there's nothing wild about their
intelligence. Incredibly smart and fast, they can strike from the
shadows and disappear in the blink of an eye. Solving puzzles and
finding things present little problem for the Shadwerl and they have a
fair amount of magical ability as well. Alignment - any will do.
Troll - Male Troll - Female
It's clobberin' time! Extremely huge and
grotesque, Trolls are loners specializing in only one thing ...kicking
butt! Massively powerful but equally as stupid, they have no magic
abilities and can barely contain their composure when in the cities.
Their size, strength and speed allows them to travel in mountains that
others wouldn't even attempt. Trolls are Neutral and can never be
anything else because they simply don't understand the concept. Card Art (2 royalty points each)
