Although best watched without knowing anything going into it, that would be rather impossible to do at this point. I'll just say, a guy, who goes to a weekend getaway with friends, has a companion who is... well.. not normal. What follows is a simple scheme that turns into a calamity of chaos that left me wondering what was going to happen from one minute to the next. You certainly can't blame this film for being predictable. Well constructed, the acting and writing are fantastic, creating a set of characters that were a joy to slaughter. This was really good sinister fun.

A woman decides to investigate an extremely devout convent where her brother is accused of committing murder / suicide. This is not a horror or thriller film but rather a solid, slow burn religious drama with supernatural overtones. Well written and acted, the character's are quite compelling and firmly held my attention, despite the leisurely pace, with a profoundly twisted zinger of an ending that changes everything and more than made up for any misgivings I had for sticking it out. This was a great addition of the genre and certainly worth watching.
Coma [2019]
aka Koma Watch for FREE right now!
A newcomer must learn how to survive in a world created by the fractured memories of coma victims. Like
The Matrix
on steroids, this Russian film was an awesome excursion into a fantastic world lorded over by the Reapers whose touch could mean death. Wasting no time, it starts you right off in the coma world with virtually no setup, matching your ignorance with that of the protagonist, forcing you to discover the world together at a nice brisk pace. Awesome spec fx and thought provoking twists made this a wonderfully bizarre experience. Loved it!
Conclave [2024]
The Pope has died and the conclave begins. An exquisitely well written and acted drama that's constantly changing as alliances shift, scandals are revealed, racism rears its ugly head, and the introduction of a new cardinal that no one has heard of before. Without any action to speak of, the film manages to keep the viewer firmly connected and involved and it never once felt slow or ponderous. The ending was completely unpredictable. Electing a new pope is not a simple process but an ugly political one and it had my wife and I hooked ...and we're not religious. Good film!
The Courier [2020]
Historical drama chronicling the relationship between Oleg Penkovsky (a Russian who fears nuclear war) and Greville Wynne (a British salesman) and how the exchange of secrets between them became vastly advantageous to the U.S. during the Cuban Missile crisis of '62. I'm usually not one for historical dramas as I know how they turn out. However, in this case, I knew nothing about these people making it a tense and compelling story with no idea how it ends. Well written with great directing and acting all around, it deftly captures the fear and paranoia of the time.
Cold Pursuit [2019]
To summarize, go to
In Order of Disappearance.
Let me start by saying that this is an excellent film. Liam Neeson and all involved did a wonderful job. That being said, except for some minor variations and a new cast, this is practically a shot-for-shot remake of the aforementioned film by the same director ...apparently in an attempt to be more approachable for American audiences. But, if you've seen the original, there's no need to see this one. If you haven't seen either, this one will definitely do unless you don't mind subtitles. Then watch the far superior original.
Cold Eyes [2013]
aka Gam-si-ja-deul Watch for FREE right now!
Korean crime thriller centered around an elite surveillance team attempting to track down an elite theft ring and its murderous mastermind. This is a typical cops & robbers drama with no real surprises but done extraordinarily well. The characterizations and dialog are extremely well written creating colorful characters full of personality and charisma making them quite fun to watch. The action is tight, well choreographed and the pacing is perfect moving along at a brisk pace making its 2 hour run time fly by in no time at all. Exceptional escapist entertainment.
Coherence [2013]

4 couples having a dinner party, during the close encounter flyby of a comet, become victims to a series of bizarre events. 'Bizarre' is the keyword here as this total mind f__k had my wife and me completely confused and totally entertained throughout. Filmed in an intimate manner, with hand held cameras, we become participants to the dinner party fully engaging us into their confusion and distress. Incredibly intelligent writing made everyone's reaction and level of angst spot on. Even with no real resolution, the ending is priceless. Awesome stuff!
Come True [2020]

A nerdy and somewhat outcast girl signs up for a sleep experiment and things get strange. Very cosmic in nature, the film tinkers around with the sleep paralysis / shadow people mythology in a very different way than previously explored. The subject matter kept me thoroughly engaged despite it being incredibly slow and easily 30 mins too long ...you're going to need to be patient. It never really lets you know what's going on but provides some macabre, creepy imagery and a pretty profound twist at the end that made me smile. Your reaction may differ.
Color Out of Space [2019]

A textbook family, starting life anew in a forest home, has a meteorite drop in their front yard. Then things get real weird. This adaption of H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror short story plays pretty much as a cross between
Creepshows's "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill"
and
Annihilation
...but far more horrific. I thought it was going to drag at first as there was a lot of time spent on a genuinely boring family with the usual squabbles but, it turns out, that only served to demonstrate how tragically out-of-depth they were once the meteor hits. Fantastic spec-fx.
Collective [2019]
aka Colectiv Watch for FREE right now!
In 2015, a fire in Bucharest's Colectiv club resulted in 27 deaths. 37 more victims would die in the hospital, many with non-life threatening injuries. The staggering level of political corruption and fraud within the medical community in Romania was thus exposed. This documentary is a thoroughly detailed examination of the issues, the seemingly impossible ability to fix the problem and the public's willingness to go right back to doing things the way they've always been done. In the last year, I've learned that the world is far stupider than I thought ...for example.
Confessional [2019]

After the death of a film student and a sports jock, several friends are placed inside a booth to 'confess'. The movie did not really succeed in what it was trying to do. However, the 3.x rating on IMDb is a bit harsh. The concept was original, intriguing, and held my attention from start to finish and that's worth a couple points right there. The twist was interesting, although it wasn't revealed very well leaving me confused as to what was happening. The nearly incomprehensible and ambiguous ending didn't help much either. But kudos for giving a bold idea a good college try.
The Conjuring 2 [2016]
The Warren's investigate a haunting in England and things play out exactly as expected. Easily 30 to 45 mins too long, it takes over an hour before the Warrens even show up to the residence in question. Up till then, it's just creepy moments and jump scares and me wondering when the story was going to go somewhere. Apparently, that's the Conjuring formula as it seems to be pretty common among many of the films. Well made, well acted, effective creeps and generally entertaining, it just offers nothing new and spends a whole lot of time doing it.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It [2021]
What the Warren's believe is a demonic possession of a child turns out to be a curse opening a whole new can of worms. Not centering around a haunting, like the other 2 Conjuring films, and avoiding the formulaic style of the other Universe films, really worked well in what I found to be the best of the bunch. Having to find and stop a human adversary, while having to fend off the attacks of the demons that adversary has conjured up, was a welcome twist and an intense ride keeping me on the edge of my seat. Finally, a Conjuring film well worth the hype! Bravo!
Cold Moon [2016]
Watch for FREE right now!
An alcoholic banker is haunted by the ghosts of some people he killed. This wasn't a particularly good movie ...the acting was weak, the dialogue was pretty simplistic, the spooks, although done fairly well and often, seemed more filler than actually adding anything to the story. However, I did find it mildly entertaining and it did keep me interested right up to the end despite it really being nothing more than a very familiar Tell-Tale Heart story with no surprises.
Cold Skin [2017]

In 1914, a man, who must spend a year on a remote island making weather measurements, finds himself under attack at night by sea creatures. The only characters in most of this film is him, the lighthouse keeper and a tamed sea creature ...which is what makes this film so interesting. The dynamics of this relationship is compelling, exciting and volatile with a somewhat surprising resolution that is both tragic and heartfelt. The action of the creature attacks is brutally intense and savage. Very well made film!
Contagion [2011]
Details the outbreak of a new virus and how it becomes a worldwide epidemic. The film just lays out the events as they occur with no action to speak of, little suspense, nothing overly dramatic, and yet the cold clinical style of it makes it more terrifying than a lot of horror movies I've seen. Excellent performances by everyone.
Conan the Barbarian [2011]
Watch for FREE right now!
Conan seeks revenge on a guy who killed his father. The guy seeks a woman whose blood will operate an ancient weapon. This is exactly what I expected from a Conan movie ...and less! It was fine for what it was even though the photographer seemed to have a hard time holding a camera still long enough to discern what's happening. It's been over 30 years since the original
Conan
so I expected something a bit more up-to-date but, sorry... Jason Momoa ain't Arnie. Not even close. The original is mucho better.
The Commuter [2018]
An ex-cop, now insurance salesman, is approached on a train to perform a service for $100k. Intrigued, at first, the situation turns into chaos and the lives of everyone on the train are in danger. Pretty much your standard 'regular guy faced with impossible odds' scenario with a good story and not a lot of action but really high on suspense ala Hitchcock style. The pacing was excellent as the movie continues to get more intense by the minute to a super climactic ending that is outstanding. Well done!
Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel [2011]
Great documentary of Roger Corman's body of film work since the '50's with numerous, humorous interviews, film clips, personal stories, all culminating with him receiving the Academy Award for lifetime achievement and, although in his '80's, his current work for the Syfy channel making
Dinoshark. With 56 director credits and 413 producer credits, few can claim such a vast library of work with nearly all of it made on a shoestring and he rarely lost a dime on anything. Excellent!
Conor McGregor: Notorious [2017]
Biodoc of Conor McGregor and his rise to winning 2 world championships in the UFC. This is the reason I rarely watch or like biographies. What we have is training, being with friends, bad mouthing the other guy, expressing opinions, showing how good a husband he is. Then we have less than 5 minutes of coverage of a fight. Repeat the process. I guess I expected a movie about an MMA fighter to be more about his MMA fights and less about his personal life ...which wasn't all that interesting after the first half hour. Beyond fighting, he's a pretty average guy.
Counterfeiters [2017]
A young man decides to counterfeit money to pay for his mother's medical bills. Perhaps a noble intent but both him, and those he surrounds himself with, are all unlikable nincompoops. Most of the film is presented in semi-real time over the course of an evening which means we must sit through every word of every conversation, go everywhere he goes, scene after scene of non-stop banality until we finally get down to the big finale by which time I was so unemphatic and frustrated, I simply didn't care.
The Command [2018]
aka Kursk Watch for FREE right now!
A semi-fictionalized account of the Kursk submarine catastrophe in 2000 where the torpedo room blew up and the survivors died before they could be rescued. I don't think I'm spoiling anything as this is a historical event and the speculation of what the crew might have done in an attempt to stay alive is the focus of the film. However, their efforts weren't particularly compelling enough to outweigh the futility of their actions. That, on top of the Russian Military being more concerned with secrets and saving face, makes the whole film rather bleak.
Contract Killers [2008]
Watch for FREE right now!
Spy wants to go straight. Uh, huh. A Jason Bourne style movie that most certainly is not. In fact, they tried so hard to make it feel that way, with the limited resources and actors that they had, it comes off more as a parody than a serious thriller. A few good scenes and its abundance of mediocre action is not enough to pull this mess from it's pit of simplistic contrivances and amateur acting, writing, and directing. Marginally entertaining ...very marginally.
Contact [1997]
We receive an extraterrestrial radio signal from space. But that takes a back seat to the scientific, religious, political, and personal chaos it creates right here on earth. Excellent story, profound dialog, awesome, heartfelt acting and extremely philosophical with a lot of food for thought. This is quite a fun ride. We miss you, Carl.
The Corruptor [1999]

In Chinatown, NYC, two gangs get into a war with each other. In the meantime, a Caucasian (Mark Wahlberg) is assigned to the Asian Gang Unit run by Chow Yun-Fat and things get complicated. This is an old favorite that I haven't seen for quite some time and was quite fun to revisit. Mark and Chow are excellent slowly developing as partners from contempt to respect. The story is complex and dances around like a hyperactive kid who can't sit still so you're constantly guessing what's next. The action is excellent including a brutal car chase. Great cop movie.
Code 8 [2019]
Watch for FREE right now!
People with powers, a drug called Psyhe and a police swat team for a major city, with drones and mecha-officers called "Guardians", are all relatively unnecessary in this typical and cliche story of a down-and-out guy getting mixed up with gangsters in hopes of earning enough money to save is ailing mother. Not a whole lot happens beyond that and many of the principal's goals go unrealized making this all somewhat rather pointless. It's rather good in its mediocrity with the sci fi elements giving it some flash. But, unfortunately, that's all it is ...mediocre, at best.
Cold Hell [2017]
aka Die Holle Watch for FREE right now!
A Thai boxing, taxi driving young woman, with no personality or humor, witnesses the death of a neighbor via a serial killer and she's now the next target. This is a good movie with far more emphasis on drama than thriller but could have been far better if they just lightened it up a bit. It's dark, depressing, overly misogynistic and doesn't really give us a whole lot to care about. The acting is exceptional, although tiresome at times, and some of the scenarios seemed to just highlight more angst but it did keep me fully interested. Watching her fight is a pleasure.
Colossal [2016]

A man and woman, childhood friends, find that when they go to a park at a specific time, a monster and robot appear in Seoul, Korea that they control. Terrific idea for a film but totally wasted in this one. What this film is about is the mean-spirited relationships between a bunch of psychologically dysfunctional, alcoholic people to the point of exchanging blows and possibly a killing? The creatures are simply a gimmick to make it appear this is a comedy/fantasy but it's not. I found nothing funny here ...just a lot of deep-seated anger. It simply depressed me.
